Steelers Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith Excited About Impressive New Young Talent

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected wide receiver Roman Wilson from Michigan in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. During the Steelers post-pick press conference, Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith had many comments on the young talent coming in. Pittsburgh improved its offensive line first and then added a talented receiving threat in Wilson. Smith commented on being excited about coaching the newly acquired talent. 

"I'm excited, never been afraid to play young guys," Smith mentioned.  

The Steelers have had an overhaul of young starters come in through the draft and free agency. Players such as newly added Troy Fautanu from Washington, Zach Frazier from WVU, and now Wilson. These additions of new players added with Smith's excitement to coach them is a great recipe for success.

"We'll be counting on these guys, young players with not a lot of experience," Smith added.

Recently, rookies have proven that they can play at the highest level of professional football in Pittsburgh. Smith ultimately wants to continue this trend. He spoke about building young players up through rookie camp and having them ready to go by Week 1. Smith has had a trend of developing players rather quickly. 

"When that ball kicks off Week 1, it'll be our job to be ready to roll." 

Smith mentioned being hopeful to create competition with a young offense. He went on to mention his proven track record of building up a competitive offense. Derrick Henry was only 25 years old when Smith was his offensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans. In their first year together, Henry put solid numbers rushing with 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns on 303 carries. The current young additions to the Steelers, along with soon to be future draft picks, could make Smith's goal ultimately a reality. 

How Does Roman Wilson Benefit The Steelers? 

Newly added Roman Wilson showed tremendous talent in the Senior Bowl and at the NFL Combine. Wilson, a 2023 National Champion, ran a speedy 4.39 40-yard dash and a 1.52 10-yard split. Wilson was the 15th rated wide receiver at the combine and the 12th most athletic. He also had a very impressive collegiate career as a Wolverine where he racked up a total of 1,707 yards receiving, 20 touchdowns, and a 16-yard yards per catch average.

Wilson will most likely start and replace former Steelers receiver Diontae Johnson after he was traded to the Carolina Panthers for cornerback Donte Jackson. Wilson will likely take his spot in the slot, a position he excelled at in college.
